The second collection on July 9-10 will be dedicated to the Capital Campaign and on July 16-17, to the Black and Indian Home Mission. Thank you for your generosity.
Holy Land Gifts, represented by the Rashmawi family who are volunteer members from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem, will be visiting our Parish the weekend of July 16-17 and selling their olive wood gifts. Their religious crafts are made in home workshops by Catholic families who make their day-to-day living by selling them to pilgrims and tourists who visit the holy sites and shrines. With the hostilities worsening in the Holy Land and a lack of Christian pilgrims, the traditional olive wood workshops have sustained severe damage. Therefore, unemployment there is at an all-time high, around 90%. The Christian community relies on services offered to pilgrims as a main source of income. Olive wood items and carvings are the only tangible products they can produce and export. The Catholics of the Holy Land graciously ask your support through prayers and the purchase of these special religious art pieces. Proceeds of the sales generate much needed employment opportunities and financial assistance for 600 Catholic families in Bethlehem. Please consider these gifts for your family, friends, and yourself and be as generous as God is to you.
The Metro Chapter of the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a meeting to discuss human trafficking of children in Southern Louisiana on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, between 7 and 10 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Hall on the premises of St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road. An assistant U.S. Attorney and a member of the FBI will present information about human trafficking in our area and how to prevent it. We congratulate our former Pastor, Fr. Frank Candalisa, on his 20th priestly anniversary. As a parish, we shall celebrate with him at the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, July 30, 2022. Archbishop Gregory Aymond has graciously accepted to preside at the Mass. A reception will follow at the gym immediately after Mass. Please take note of the date!
Many people within our parish are requesting assistance. We welcome food donations, which may be placed in the foyer of the church or brought to the rectory. We are in need of items such as cereal, grits, oatmeal, cans of fruit, tuna fish, Nutella, beans, soup, tomato sauce, Chef Boyardee, granola bars, cereal bars, canned sausages, etc. We also need ramen noodles, rice, pasta mixes, macaroni & cheese, spaghetti and pasta. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to handle cold products. Please help us by checking expiration dates as we are unable to distribute out-of-date, expired foods. If you are in need of assistance, please call the Outreach Help Line at 504-831-7692 and leave a message. We will return your call as soon as possible. We will help as many as our food and finances will permit. May God bless all of you and keep all of us healthy.
In order to provide for the pastoral care of the people of God in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Archbishop Aymond has assigned Deacon Michael P. Cardella, Jr., to our Parish, effective June 25, 2022.
Michael A. Cardella Jr. of Metairie and his wife Vanessa count many blessings from diaconate formation. During the five-year formation journey, their sons Augustine and Giovanni joined older siblings Rosemarie, Michael, and Vincent. Other gifts of grace abound, as Cardella serves as acolyte at the parish of his baptism, St. Christopher the Martyr in Metairie. The couple will celebrate 17 years of marriage on the date of ordination, June 25th. A graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School, Texas A& M University, and Ohio State University, Cardella currently works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “Our Lord Jesus fed thousands with just five loaves and two fish,” Cardella said. “He takes our humble offerings and multiplies them beyond our understanding!”
We are grateful for Deacon Cardell's service and welcome him warmly!
The Bereavement and Support Group Ministry will begin having its monthly meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 6:15 p.m. in the Parish Center. All those who wish to attend should contact Tom and Terry Canale at 504-833-4251 or the Rectory Office at 504-837-8214.
Family Day in the Archdiocese of New Orleans is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 25, 2022. The purpose of Family Day is to provide the parishes of the Archdiocese an opportunity to gather their families and encourage them to renew friendships, form new ones, and to cultivate an appreciation for the importance and goodness of family life. This year, families are invited to "Rise to the Occasion," that is, meeting the challenges right before us and within our abilities with greater courage and hope to be "leaven for the world."
Beginning in 1946, the mission entrusted to the Holy Name Society of the Archdiocese of New Orleans by Archbishop Joseph Rummel, ninth Archbishop of New Orleans, was the sponsorship of a daily broadcast of the Rosary Prayer to the people of the greater New Orleans area. Archbishop Rummel took this action as a direct response to the Blessed Virgin’s Request at Fatima for the daily recitation of the Rosary, which Our Lady has continually requested in appearances she has made since that time, most notably in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hersogevina. The Holy Name sponsorship of the daily broadcast of the Rosary has been endorsed by Archbishop Rummel’s successors, Cardinal Cody, Archbishops' Hannan, Schulte, Hughes, and Aymond.
The Rosary is recited daily at 6:00 p.m. on radio station WVOG (600) on the AM dial. The cost to continue the radio broadcasts is in excess of $6,000.00 annually. The only source of income for expenses is the “RADIO ROSARY DRIVE” envelopes given out to each parish annually by the Holy Name Society members. Anyone wishing to donate during the year can use the same envelopes and mail in with your parish’s name on it. We thank you in advance for your generous contributions. May God bless all of you.
